There have been reports of cases of Group A Streptococcus (GAS) bacteria in Japan, increasing to 36 more cases this year compared to last year’s 941, bringing up the numbers to 977.
This data is brought up by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases. It is difficult to diagnose and is a life-threatening, death-leading condition. Probable signs and symptoms are: sudden high fever, low blood pressure, vomiting, diarrhoea, a rash that takes a resemblance to sunburns which are located on the palms and soles, confusion, muscle aches, redness of your eyes, mouth and throat, seizures and headaches. Additional symptoms include sore throat, swelling, organ failure, and limb pain.
Death can occur within 48 hours of contracting the disease. According to experts, people over 50 years are more susceptible to the disease. Washing hands and treating open wounds are two methods that can drastically affect one’s outcome. STSS has a mortality rate of 30%.
