Electro-mechanical reshaping is a new procedure that might hold some promise when it comes to replacing LASIK. This molecular approach to surgery was borne out of a collaboration between a surgeon at UC Irvine and a chemist at Occidental College. Astigmatism, near-sightedness, and far-sightedness can all be used as an indication instead of lasers. The shape of the cornea could be modified by EMR by providing an electrical current through the corneal tissue. This procedure does not degrade the structure or the viability of the corneal tissue. The idea here is that the corneal tissue can be permanently changed instead of the temporary effect we see with lenses such as Ortho K. There might not be many candidates who could qualify for the novel procedure as the vision change is of -3 or +3 dioptres. It is a non-invasive procedure. There haven’t been any human trials so far, the research has been conducted on rabbit eyes as of now.
