The annual tea consumption worldwide is estimated at 7.27 billion kilograms. Kratom is one such tea found to be indigenous to the Southeast Asia. Traditionally, it was a remedy as a herbal drug to the labourers and the farmers from Thailand and Malaysia for stimulant effects. It is a recovery replacement for chronically dependent opium users. This psychoactive drug hasn’t changed its role much in present times. There was a slow but steady increase in the death toll from 152 in 2016-2017 to 4,100 in 2020-2022. Blame it on commercialism.
Teas and coffees are thought to have psychoactive substances that haywire our brains’ programming to stay alert and energetic. Well, kratom is no different! It is known to produce stimulant and sedative effects. At low doses, stimulant effects of increased alertness, physical energy, talkativeness and sociable behaviour. At high doses, opioid, sedative and euphoric effects are produced. Effects last for 2 to 5 hours. Kratom is capable of inducing psychotic symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms of kratom are hostility, aggression, emotional liability, wet nose, achy muscles, and bones, and jerky movements of the limbs. Kratom is mainly used by people suffering from opioid use disorder.
Despite not having any medicinal listings in the US medication marketplace, it still poses a threat between life and death!
