In studies conducted by PREDICT, there has been evidence showing that 90% of the individuals researched on, indicated the presence of Oscillibacter bacteria a.k.a a ‘good gut bug’. But what exactly is it?
Oscillibacter belonging to Firmicutes phyla, a novel species of interest by scientists and researchers alike. The Firmicutes society of bacteria have made the human gut their home or biome if you will. Their family extends to over 200 genera. This is inclusive of Lactobacillus, Ruminococcus, and Clostridium.
Firmicutes has potential, in the sense, it is has a reputation for supporting metabolic health, reducing risk of developing chronic diseases (obesity, heart disease as well as type 2 diabetes!), and supporting the natural immunity as well. Fermentation and creation of the prerequisite bi-products is their specialty. SCFAs, known to us as short chain fatty acids is butyrate, produced by this phyla.
This butyrate has an essential role in the human gut. It maintains framework of the gut lining, providing the cells with energy, reduces gut inflammation, keeps blood sugar levels at optimum range, propels the immune system function in a good direction and keeps you healthy overall by maintaining your weight in balance. They now have a gaining momentum with their ability to ‘declog’ your arteries.
You can know more about your weight than ever before with the Firmicutes/Bacteriodetes ratio! How you may ask? It’s simple really, if you’re an obese person the chances are, you’re having an increased ratio of it. If you’re an inflammatory bowel disease person, you’re having a decreased ratio of it.
If you are looking to enhance your own Firmicutes inside of you, then say no more, you’ve come to the right place! Fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, eggs, avocados, walnuts, almonds, chia seeds, and extra virgin olive oil are all the more, a hearty feeding tool for these microbes!
Polyphenols can aid us in our quest of balancing the human gut microbiome when it’s needed!
