A powerful CNS depressant of its kind. GHB has made a notorious name for itself in the clubs and the crime scenes. A rapist’s favourite treat for an unsuspecting victim.
The full form of GHB is gamma-hydroxybutyrate or gamma-hydroxybutyric acid. It is an odourless and colourless liquid. Powder and pill forms are readily available. May be slightly bitter or salty to taste. The effects of GHB varies from person to person. It is often consumed in small doses and eventually larger doses by the addict or innocent. It is illegally bought online or from street vendors. Created for anaesthesia uses, it is now withdrawn though it was indicated for the treatment of narcolepsy (malfunctioning of sleep-wake cycles) and cataplexy (immediate muscle weakness).
GBL (known as gamma-butyrolactone), an industrial solvent, can convert to GHB under the human body’s processes. In smaller doses, 1-3 grams of the drug is enough to knock the consumer with decreased inhibition, increased sex drive, an euphoria feeling that is similar to ecstasy, sedative effects, memory loss from that sedative effects, and synergistic effects that progressively increases the risk of overdosing with alcohol use.
In larger doses, 4-5 grams of GHB is even more disruptive for the human body, with heavy sedative effects, such as nausea, vomiting, stiffening of muscles, disorientation, profound sedation, convulsions, coma and respiratory collapse. Long term use of this can result in dependence and have symptoms similar to alcohol dependency. When mixed with other CNS depressants, it can give respiratory depression, diaphoresis (cold sweats), ‘eyes rolling’, muscular spasms and convulsions.
The onset of this drug effects are within 10 minutes initially, the peak at 45 minutes and the after effects are till 4 hours. During the intoxication interval, the victim is unable to recall any single event that has occurred during the day. Currently, the class of this drug has been already upgraded to a Class B from Class C.
