Jennie is special. She’s a robotic labrador puppy; the mastermind behind the creation is the Santa Clarita-based company Tombot. She can replace the live pet animals that need care and nurture.
At the CES 2025 (Consumer Electronic Show) event showcased the next generation of robotic companions for those with cognitive and emotional challenges such as seniors with dementia/mild cognitive impairment, children who are autistic, adults having PTSD, anxiety or depression. She’s a lap dog designed for limited mobility users. Clinical studies are being conducted to explore her wider functionalities. This is in partnership with 17 hospitals and assisted living facilities. Her primary target audience includes seniors in assisted living and children or adults in homes where live pets are impractical. There are more than 8,000 pre-orders and the company plans to deliver in less than a year. According to the estimates, Jennie’s potential audience includes over a billion people worldwide when factoring in those with mild cognitive impairment. The idea for this invention arose when the Founder of the company, Tom Steven’s mother was suffering from Alzheimer’s and she wasn’t able to look after her dog.
Jennie is a companion robot with a lot more to offer than we’d like to account for.
Update: One of their goals (company) is that Tombot’s robotic dogs will be FDA-approved someday.
