Dear doctors, specialists of the hospital and to all the women who probably went on to do great things without receiving the care they needed,
Changing PCOS to PMOS as an abbreviation change barely scratches the surface of female reproductive health and women’s health in general. In fact, there’s no haematology specialist involved in this research makes it even more damming! Maybe an obstetric touch would’ve made it a teeny tiny bit special but that’s just about it. Roughly 70% of Portugal has people with bleeding issues and all of it doesn’t get an honourable mention when you get blood results.
But if your childhood was as messed up as mine, you’d know what healthcare really means inside and out. Even psychiatric patients aren’t researched on and represented enough! And you know what, its fine, at the end of the day, the world keeps orbiting around the sun, on to the next day.
What doesn’t change is diagnosis, our fundamental understanding of how much iron and life is created and tossed out every week in a month’s time, every year, all for our critical thinking and imaginative power to go to waste. This isn’t science and clinical research, it’s our medical spirit that’s extinguished all because someone forgot the other specialties that play an alarmingly equal role as much as the other specialties do!
Its fine, doctors get paid, patients are checked on, its FINE! Name any profession and area where representation mattered?! Reseach isn’t any different. I guess removing the uterus is a normal at this point. Not the emphasis on how glorifyingly empowering vitamin C can be nor the fact that we can’t brutally distinguish whether its a high blood pressure that causes some kind of internal bodily bleeding or an unidentified bleeding disorder?
The world and God himself will never know, maybe because no doctor would knowingly venture out into the unknown. We always say we’re women in a man’s world.
You be the judge and count on your fingers how many specialties connect to a women’s incredible superpower to harbour life and to care for itself all of it for 9 months! I dare you!
Signing off,
Nivea Vaz
